FIRE SAFETY

The first priority in the event of a fire is to get everyone out of the building safely.  The fire emergency service can then be contacted either with a mobile ‘phone or using the public call box at the junction with the main (A592) road, some 200 yards from the Hall.

Any group occupying the Hall should appoint a responsible person to take charge in the event of a fire emergency.  This person should ensure that he or she knows how many are in the group and that all present are aware of the location of the exits and of the break glass alarms.  The responsible person should also ensure that the fire exit doors are unbolted while the Hall is occupied, but must also ensure that they are bolted again before leaving.

1. Alarms

The main hall, reading room, kitchen, boiler room and the passageway by the toilets and shower are equipped with smoke alarms and will sound in the event of a fire.  Alternatively, if someone notices a fire before the alarm sounds, there are break glass alarms in all main areas.

2. Exits

There are clearly marked exits at both the front corners of the building and in the kitchen.  Care should be taken not to obstruct any exit when arranging tables or other furniture and equipment.  In the event of a fire use the nearest exit and gather in the field adjacent to the Hall.  Should the electricity supply fail emergency lighting will come on to facilitate finding the exits.

3. Fire Extinguishers

There are appropriate and clearly marked fire extinguishers in the main hall, reading room and kitchen.  There is also a fire blanket in the kitchen.

Before using them remember that the main priority is to evacuate everyone as quickly and safely as possible.  The main use for the extinguishers is, if necessary, to inhibit the spread of a fire for enough time to ensure safe evacuation.

Although it may sometimes be possible to extinguish minor fires with the extinguishers or the fire blanket it is dangerous to delay evacuation in order to fight a fire which is not immediately put out.
